Context
Ghana was the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence (1957), and its anthem reflects this pioneering spirit. The music was composed by Philip Gbeho, and the original lyrics by the government were later revised in 1966 after the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah to remove references to him. The current lyrics by Michael Kwame Gbordzoe focus on national unity and divine guidance.
Lyrics
God bless our homeland Ghana,
And make our nation great and strong,
Bold to defend forever
The cause of Freedom and of Right.
Fill our hearts with true humility,
Make us cherish fearless honesty,
And help us to resist oppressors' rule
With all our will and might for evermore.
