Context

Guinea was the first French colony in Africa to gain independence in 1958, after voting 'No' in Charles de Gaulle's referendum on the French Community. President Sekou Toure famously declared 'We prefer poverty in freedom to riches in slavery.' The anthem reflects this fierce anti-colonial stance and Pan-African vision.
