Context

Adopted in 2004 after the fall of Saddam Hussein, 'Mawtini' was originally written by Palestinian poet Ibrahim Touqan in 1934. The poem had already been widely known across the Arab world as a pan-Arab patriotic song before Iraq made it their anthem.
