About Nationalia

A data journalism project exploring national anthems around the world

What is Nationalia?

Nationalia is a cultural reference and data journalism project that catalogs, translates, and analyzes the national anthems of 195 countries. We combine structured data, original journalism, and interactive visualizations to reveal the stories that nations tell about themselves through their most sacred songs.

Why national anthems?

National anthems are one of the few cultural artifacts that nearly every country in the world shares. They condense centuries of history, ideology, and collective identity into a few minutes of music and poetry. Yet most people know only their own. Nationalia exists to change that.

Our data

Every anthem in our database includes metadata on its composition, adoption history, themes, mood, original lyrics, and translations. We classify each anthem across 17 lyrical themes and 8 emotional tones, enabling cross-cultural analysis at a scale that would be impossible manually.

Scope

Nationalia covers 195 countries: all 193 United Nations member states, plus Kosovo (recognized by 104 UN members, with its own distinct anthem and national identity) and Vatican City (a UN permanent observer state with its own anthem). We do not cover dependent territories, sub-national regions, or historical states, though some historical anthems appear in our editorial stories.

Methodology

Each anthem is analyzed independently for its lyrical content, historical context, and emotional character. Themes and moods are assigned based on close reading of the original text (not the translation). Where multiple interpretations exist, we favor the one most supported by the anthem's historical context. Our data is continuously reviewed and refined.

Codebook

Every anthem is classified along two dimensions: lyrical themes (what the anthem says) and emotional mood (how it feels). An anthem may have 1 to 5 themes but exactly one mood. Definitions:

Decision Rules

When classifying anthems, we follow these principles:

  1. Original text only. Themes and moods are determined from the original-language lyrics, not from translations. Translations can lose nuance, especially for metaphor and historical allusion.
  2. Historical context matters. An anthem that references "blood" in a revolutionary context is tagged "revolution," not "battle." We consider what the author intended at the time of writing.
  3. Primary vs. secondary themes. The first 1-2 themes listed are primary (the anthem's central message). Additional themes are secondary (present but not dominant).
  4. Mood reflects the overall emotional arc, not individual lines. An anthem that begins solemnly but builds to a triumphant climax is classified by its dominant emotional character, not its opening bars.
  5. Instrumental anthems. Anthems without official lyrics (Spain, San Marino, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo) are classified by mood based on their musical character but receive no thematic tags.

Editorial approach

Our stories are data journalism: we analyze patterns across the full corpus of anthems rather than treating each in isolation. When we write about themes of defiance or the language of national identity, we support our arguments with data from all anthems in our database.

A note on Russia

Nationalia covers all 193 UN member states, plus Kosovo and Vatican City. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched on February 24, 2022, has been condemned by the UN General Assembly. The European Parliament and several national legislatures have designated Russia a state sponsor of terrorism. We include Russia's anthem for dataset completeness and transparency. Its anthem page carries an editorial note, and its inclusion does not imply editorial endorsement.

Technology

Nationalia is a static site built with Astro, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. No cookies, no tracking, no server-side rendering. Every page is pre-built for fast, private, and accessible browsing.
