Written and composed by Urium Tamuera Ioteba, the anthem was adopted upon Kiribati's independence from the United Kingdom on July 12, 1979. The anthem is sung in Gilbertese (I-Kiribati), the local Micronesian language. Kiribati straddles both the equator and the International Date Line.
