Botswana
- 1. Motsete wrote the song in Ghana in 1962. According to Motsamai Mpho, a co-founder of the Bechuanaland People's Party, he, Motsete and three others were the first to sing it, on their flight home from a pan-Africanist conference in Accra
- 2. The chorus calls on both men and women to rise and work together for their country
- 3. Botswana's anthem speaks of peace and work rather than war: its first verse asks that the land may always be at peace, and its second celebrates a nation united in harmony and peace
Namibia
- 1. By Doëseb's own account, the melody came to him as he improvised at the 1989 memorial service for the assassinated activist Anton Lubowski; when the government called for an anthem, he transcribed it into staff notation.
- 2. Doëseb formally assigned the copyright in the words and music to the Namibian government, and a clause of the 2018 Act declares the melody, music and lyrics to be in the public domain.
- 3. Authorship of the words has been disputed. In 2006 the former information minister Hidipo Hamutenya said he had written them "on the plane to Cuba", which Doëseb denied; in 2023 two former members of the national symbols committee, Ben Amadhila and Andrew Matjila, said Hamutenya had supplied the wording, while the Presidency reaffirmed Doëseb as writer and composer.
- 4. The anthem is sung in English, the country's official language, and the 2018 Act gives the words only in English; yet in the 2011 census English was the main language of just 3.4% of Namibian households.
