Context
Adopted in 1992 after the fall of the Derg military regime. Ethiopia is unique in Africa for never having been colonized (apart from a brief Italian occupation 1936-1941), and this pride in sovereignty permeates the national identity. The current anthem replaced the Derg-era anthem and focuses on unity, diversity, and human rights rather than revolution.
Lyrics
