- 1. The melody comes from a tenth-century chorale that Federico Consolo found in a monastic breviary in Florence's Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana.
- 2. For 131 years the anthem had no title of its own. It was known simply as the Inno Nazionale della Repubblica, the National Anthem of the Republic, until Constitutional Law no. 2 of 26 September 2025 titled it "Terra di Libertà".
- 3. That law placed the anthem alongside the flag and the coat of arms in article 2-bis of the 1974 Declaration of the Rights of Citizens, but expressly left its text to a separate ordinary law.
- 4. The words taught in San Marino's schools were not written for the anthem. They adapt the closing sentence of the speech Giosuè Carducci, later Italy's first Nobel laureate in literature, gave at the inauguration of the Palazzo Pubblico on 30 September 1894, the day the anthem was first played. They have never been adopted, and the bill debated in 2026 proposes a revised version that drops the reference to the glory of Italy.

- 1. Like the anthems of Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina and San Marino, Kosovo's anthem has no official lyrics.
- 2. The competition, announced on 12 March 2008 and open to everyone, asked for a piece between 30 seconds and one minute long that resembled no country's, party's or movement's anthem and implied loyalty to no ethnic community. MPs voted on a shortlist of three, and Mengjiqi's entry won the 10,000-euro prize.
- 3. Mengjiqi's entry was submitted with Albanian verses, which the selection committee removed. In 2018 he said that official lyrics would be premature while, in his words, state-building was still an ongoing process.
- 4. Mengjiqi has described the anthem as having 'a human character', with no military elements.
