Analysis
EditorialAdopted unanimously by Niger's National Assembly on 22 June 2023, replacing 'La Nigérienne' which had served since 1961. The previous anthem, written by French composers, contained verses many Nigeriens viewed as expressing gratitude toward the former colonial power. After President Mahamadou Issoufou announced the planned replacement in 2019 and the Council of Ministers commissioned a national committee in March 2022, the new anthem was delivered as the work of a group of national experts. Its lyrics invoke the Niger River and the Ténéré desert, the courage of ancestors, and the defence of sovereignty as the country positions itself as 'the emblem and torch of Africa advancing'.
