Key Facts
- 1. The chorus opens and closes with the line 'My homeland Kuwait, may you be safe for glory', and it returns after each of the three stanzas.
- 2. The first broadcast fell on 25 February, Kuwait's National Day, which commemorates the accession of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah in 1950.
- 3. The anthem replaced the Amiri Salute, an instrumental piece played since 1951. Its words and music were chosen in an open competition run by a committee of the Council of Ministers, chaired by Crown Prince Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.
- 4. It was not Kuwait's first sung anthem: from the 1930s, pupils of the Mubarakiya School sang an earlier national song, beginning 'Al-Sha'b al-Kuwaiti lak al-bushra' ('Good tidings to you, people of Kuwait').
