Interesting facts
Belarus
- 1. The Belarusian opposition movement uses an alternative anthem, 'Mahutny Bozha' (Mighty God), which was briefly the official anthem from 1991 to 1995 before being replaced.
- 2. Composer Nestor Sakalowski originally wrote the melody for a 1944 Soviet propaganda film, and it was later adapted as the Belarusian SSR anthem.
- 3. Belarus held a national anthem competition in 2002 that received over 100 submissions, but the government ultimately chose to retain the Soviet-era melody with updated lyrics.
Russia
- 1. Sergei Mikhalkov wrote lyrics for this melody three times: under Stalin (1943), under Brezhnev (1977), and under Putin (2000), each time adjusting the ideology while keeping the same tune
- 2. Between 1990 and 2000, Russia used Glinka's wordless 'Patriotic Song' as its anthem; athletes and officials often stood in awkward silence because there were no lyrics to sing
- 3. The melody was originally composed for the 'Hymn of the Bolshevik Party' in 1939, before being promoted to serve as the Soviet state anthem in 1944
