Analysis
EditorialRussia's current anthem uses the melody composed by Alexander Alexandrov in 1939 for the Soviet anthem. After the Soviet Union's dissolution in 1991, Russia initially adopted Mikhail Glinka's instrumental 'Patriotic Song' as its anthem. In 2000, President Vladimir Putin restored the Soviet-era melody with new lyrics by Sergei Mikhalkov, who had also written the Soviet anthem lyrics in 1943 and revised them in 1977. Mikhalkov thus wrote three sets of words for the same melody under three different political systems.
