Interesting facts
Micronesia
- 1. The words were written by Cy Pickerill, one of the first principals of the Pacific Islands Central School when it was located in Chuuk; she was known across Micronesia for travelling to the outer islands in search of the most talented students.
- 2. The melody comes from the German song 'Ich hab mich ergeben', dating from around 1820, which briefly served as an unofficial anthem of West Germany after the Second World War; Johannes Brahms quoted the same tune in his Academic Festival Overture.
- 3. It replaced 'Preamble', the anthem used from 1979 to 1991, whose words were drawn largely from the preamble of the FSM constitution.
Palau
- 1. Palau was one of the last territories in the Pacific to gain independence, becoming sovereign in 1994
- 2. In 2015 Palau's national congress created the Palau National Marine Sanctuary, a fully protected no-take zone covering 80 percent of the country's waters
- 3. Palau has a unique relationship with the United States through a Compact of Free Association, which allows Palauans to live and work in the U.S.
