Key Facts
- 1. The words were written by Cy Pickerill, one of the first principals of the Pacific Islands Central School when it was located in Chuuk; she was known across Micronesia for travelling to the outer islands in search of the most talented students.
- 2. The melody comes from the German song 'Ich hab mich ergeben', dating from around 1820, which briefly served as an unofficial anthem of West Germany after the Second World War; Johannes Brahms quoted the same tune in his Academic Festival Overture.
- 3. It replaced 'Preamble', the anthem used from 1979 to 1991, whose words were drawn largely from the preamble of the FSM constitution.

Analysis
Editorial'Patriots of Micronesia', also known as 'Across All Micronesia', became the national anthem when Public Law 7-31 was signed on 10 December 1991. The islands had been administered by the United States as part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands until 3 November 1986, when the Compact of Free Association took effect; the UN formally ended the trusteeship in 1990. The FSM consists of four states spread across the western Pacific: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae, each with its own distinct culture and language.
