EditorialThe current verses were written by Eusebio Lillo in 1847, replacing the original anti-Spanish text by Bernardo de Vera y Pintado; at Lillo's own suggestion, Vera's 1819 chorus was kept. The music, by the Spanish composer Ramón Carnicer, had its official premiere in Chile on 23 December 1828. A 1941 decree authorized an official edition of the anthem, and since a decree of 1990 only the fifth verse and the chorus are sung at ceremonies.
