Cambodia's anthem has been dropped and restored more than once. Created under the monarchy and adopted as the national anthem in the early 1940s, it was replaced in 1970 by the Khmer Republic and, after a brief return in 1975, by the anthems of the Khmer Rouge regime and of the Vietnamese-backed People's Republic of Kampuchea. It was restored in 1993 when the monarchy was re-established.
