Key Facts

• 1. The music is officially credited to Barsegh Kanachyan, but the melody is older: its first known performance was at a concert in Tiflis (now Tbilisi) on 15 March 1885, the year Kanachyan was born. He is credited with reworking the music in the days of the First Republic, and who first composed it remains disputed.
• 2. Nalbandian's poem had six stanzas; the anthem uses four of them, with some words changed.
• 3. A 2025 amendment to the anthem law changed the order of the stanzas: the anthem now ends with the verse about the tricolour flag instead of the verse about dying for the nation's freedom.
