Key Facts
- 1. The anthem is performed in Amharic but Ethiopia has over 80 languages; choosing Amharic was controversial as it privileged one ethnic group's language over the many others in this deeply diverse nation.
- 2. Ethiopia's imperial anthem, 'Ityopya Hoy,' was a grand orchestral piece influenced by European classical music, while the current anthem deliberately uses simpler, more accessible musical phrasing.
- 3. The lyrics emphasize 'equality' and 'human rights' rather than military pride or historical glory, reflecting the 1992 constitution's attempt to break from decades of authoritarian rule.
Lyrics

Analysis
EditorialAdopted in 1992 after the fall of the Derg military regime. Ethiopia is unique in Africa for never having been colonized (apart from a brief Italian occupation 1936-1941), and this pride in sovereignty permeates the national identity. The current anthem replaced the Derg-era anthem and focuses on unity, diversity, and human rights rather than revolution.
