Analysis
EditorialAfter independence in 1991, Turkmenistan at first kept the anthem of the Turkmen SSR, without words. A new anthem was adopted by law on 27 September 1996; its refrain praised President Saparmurat Niyazov under his title Türkmenbaşy. After Niyazov's death in December 2006, a law of 5 December 2008 approved the current text, from which the references to him were removed.
