Key Facts

  • 1. North Yemen's pre-unification anthem was a pan-Arab composition shared with the United Arab Republic, so at unification the South's anthem was chosen partly because it was distinctly Yemeni in character.
  • 2. Composer Ayoob Tarish Absi recorded over 300 songs in his career and is so revered that his image appeared on Yemeni banknotes, a rare honor for a musician in the Arab world.
  • 3. Despite the ongoing civil war that has split the country since 2014, both the Houthi-controlled north and the internationally recognized government in the south continue to use the same national anthem.

Analysis

Editorial

Adopted in 1990 when North and South Yemen unified, the anthem was chosen from the former South Yemen. The unification was a brief hopeful moment before the country descended into civil war in 1994 and ongoing conflict.
