كتب كلمات النشيد جواكيم أوزوريو دوكي-إسترادا على مدى ثلاثة عشر عاماً تقريباً قبل اعتمادها رسمياً عام 1922. أما اللحن فيعود إلى عام 1831 من تأليف فرانسيسكو مانويل دا سيلفا، بعد تنازل الإمبراطور بيدرو الأول مباشرة. يشتهر النشيد بصعوبة أدائه بسبب لغته البرتغالية القديمة ومداه الصوتي الواسع.
يُعد النشيد البرازيلي من أكثر الأناشيد الوطنية شاعرية في العالم، إذ يصف جمال الطبيعة البرازيلية ويحتفي بالاستقلال والحرية. يشير النشيد إلى كوكبة الصليب الجنوبي التي تظهر على العلم البرازيلي.
من المفارقات أن اللحن كان في الأصل أغنية احتفال بتنازل الإمبراطور بيدرو الأول عن العرش، أي أنها كانت بمثابة أغنية وداع للإمبراطور قبل أن تصبح النشيد الوطني.
