Oh Madre, a tus pies he inclinado esta cabeza,
My golden Bengal, I love you.
Forever your sky, your air play a flute within my soul.
O Mother, in spring the fragrance of your mango groves drives me wild with joy,
Ah, I could die, ah me!
O Mother, at harvest time, what sweet smiles I have seen in your brimming fields!
What beauty, what shade, what affection, what tenderness!
What a sari's hem you have spread at the foot of the banyans, along the banks of the rivers!
Mother, the words from your lips fall on my ears like nectar,
Ah, I could die, ah me!
Mother, when your face grows sad, O Mother, I am awash with tears.
In this playhouse of yours my childhood passed,
Smearing your very dust and soil on my limbs, I count my life blessed.
When the day is done, at evening, what a lamp you light in the home!
Ah, I could die, ah me!
Then, leaving all my games, O Mother, I come running to your lap.
In your meadows where the cattle graze, at the ferry landing for the far shore,
On your village paths, shaded and loud with birdsong all day long,
In your courtyards heaped with paddy, the days of my life go by,
Ah, I could die, ah me!
O Mother, all those who are my brothers, O Mother, are your herdsmen, your farmers.
O Mother, at your feet I have laid down this head of mine,
Give me the dust of your feet; it will be the jewel on my head.
O Mother, whatever wealth a poor man has, I shall lay at your feet,
Ah, I could die, ah me!
I will no longer buy from others' houses, Mother, a noose for my neck and call it your ornament.
