- 1. 国名はシラクサの聖ルチアにちなむ。伝説によれば、彼女の祝日である12月13日に島で難破したフランス人船員たちが、聖女をたたえてこの名をつけたという。
- 2. 島は英国とフランスの間で14回も支配者が入れ替わり、1814年に最終的に英国の植民地となった。このため「西インド諸島のヘレネ」と呼ばれるようになり、国歌の第2節もこの「西のヘレネ」をめぐる戦いを振り返っている。
