Deviza-i libertate și scopul ei preasfânt.
Cum stau ca brazi în munte voinici sute de mii;
N-ajunse iataganul barbarei semilune,
A cărui plăgi fatale și azi le mai simțim;
Al cărui jug de seculi ca vitele-l purtăm;
Strigați în lumea largă că Dunărea-i furată
Prin intrigă și silă, viclene uneltiri!
Preoți, cu crucea-n frunte căci oastea e creștină,
Deviza-i libertate și scopul ei preasfânt.
Mirad, majestuosas sombras, Miguel, Esteban, Corvino,
Alza tu amplia frente y mira a tu alrededor,
Ve cómo cientos de miles de valientes se yerguen como abetos en la montaña;
Mirad, majestuosas sombras, Miguel, Esteban, Corvino,
Cuyas heridas fatales todavía hoy sentimos;
Cuyo yugo hemos llevado por siglos como el ganado;
Awaken, Romanian, from your deathly sleep,
In which you were plunged by barbarous tyrants!
Now or never, forge yourself a different fate,
To which even your cruel enemies shall bow!
Now or never let us prove to the world
That in these hands there still flows a Roman's blood,
And that in our breasts we proudly bear a name
Triumphant in battles, a name of Trajan!
Behold, majestic shades, Michael, Stephen, Corvinus,
The Romanian nation, your great-grandchildren,
With armed hands, with your fire in their veins,
"Life in liberty or death!" they all cry out.
Priests, lead with the cross before you, for the army is Christian,
Its motto is liberty and its purpose most holy.
Better that we die in battle, in full glory,
Than be slaves once more upon our ancient land!
Raise your broad forehead and look around you,
See how hundreds of thousands of brave men stand like firs on a mountain;
They await but a voice and leap like wolves upon the fold,
Old men, grown men, young men, from mountains and from plains!
Behold, majestic shades, Michael, Stephen, Corvinus,
The Romanian nation, your great-grandchildren,
With armed hands, with your fire in their veins,
"Life in liberty or death!" they all cry out.
You were undone by the malice of envy
And by blind disunion at the Milcov and the Carpathians!
But we, our souls pierced by holy liberty,
Swear that we shall join hands, to be brothers for ever!
A mother widowed since the days of Michael the Great
Asks of her sons today a helping hand,
And curses, with tears in her eyes, any one of them
Who in such peril would turn traitor!
Let him perish by lightning, by thunderbolt and brimstone,
Whoever would withdraw from the glorious place,
When the homeland or our mother, with a tender heart,
Calls on us to pass through sword and fire!
Not enough was the yataghan of the barbarous crescent,
Whose fatal wounds we feel even today;
Now the knout forces its way into our ancestral hearths,
But the Lord is our witness that living we shall not be crushed!
Not enough was despotism with all its blindness,
Whose yoke we have borne for centuries like cattle;
Now the cruel ones attempt, in their blind arrogance,
To take our language from us, but only dead shall we yield it!
Romanians of the four corners, now or never
Unite in thought, unite in feeling!
Proclaim to the wide world that the Danube has been stolen
Through intrigue and force, through cunning machinations!
Priests, lead with the cross before you, for the army is Christian,
Its motto is liberty and its purpose most holy.
Better that we die in battle, in full glory,
Than be slaves once more upon our ancient land!
